 Amahl and the Night Visitors

This past 2016-7 holiday season, Raylynmor Opera presented the timeless Christmas classic Amahl and the Night Visitors in the Dublin School.

Originally written for television in 1951 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti, this one act opera depicts the story of the crippled boy Amahl and his mother who are visited by the Magi, on their way to see the Christ Child. The splendor of the three king’s contrasts with the poor trappings of Amahl and his mother, who can offer only a bed of straw for their comfort. The riches of the Magi prove too much for Amahl’s mother, as she attempts to steal their gold meant for the Christ child. King Melchior sounds the opera’s basic theme of charity by offering their treasure to this poor family, saying the Christ child has no need for riches or wealth. Amahl, in turn, offers his only possession, his crutch, as his gift to the Christ child. This act of charity leads to a miraculous healing of Amahl’s lameness; he leaves with the Magi to visit the Christ child.

The performance on Sunday was sold-out.

Raylynmor’s production encapsulated the Opera’s theme of charity, by asking patrons to bring canned goods and foodstuffs to the performance. They were donated on their behalf to Keene’s Community Kitchen.

Author. J. H. Sanderson's Roadhouse Productions LLC is a Season Sponsor of, and in Honor of, Artistic Director Benjamin Robinson.

Robinson, based in New York City, has been working with Raylynmor for over 5 years, first as a featured cast member but more recently as Artistic Director. As such he was responsible for such productions as Gianni Schicchi, Shakespeare Goes to the Opera, and more recently Verdi’s Macbeth. For Macbeth, Robinson translated the original Italian libretto into English, then rewrote the lyrics to mirror the frantic election scene of 2016. Performed at Peterborough Players and Heberton Hall last October, it received rave reviews from both new and seasoned opera fans alike.

In recognizing Robinson's talent, Mia Moravis, on behalf of J. H. Sanderson’s Roadhouse Productions presented the $6,000 sponsorship to Raylynmor during its recent production run of Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Raylynmor Opera Fills the Community Kitchen Pantry

Raylynmor Opera, founded in 1995, has produced live opera for the Monadnock Region for over twenty years. After a season in which it produced concerts, galas and an opera celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 1616, it most recently produced the Christmas classic Amahl and the Night Visitors at Dublin School in Dublin. Produced in conjunction with the Community Kitchen of Keene, patrons were asked to bring canned goods and foodstuffs, emphasizing the opera’s theme of charity and giving. The bountiful harvest of donations from patrons attending the performances were presented to the Community Kitchen by president Rick MacMillan
