Quarantine and livestream with the man you love and fear the most

Pagliacci is the story of a traveling theatre troupe, headed by the abusive Canio, husband of Nedda. Longing for a way out of her dysfunctional marriage, Nedda has been having an on and off affair with Silvio, a local man. When Canio’s right hand man, Tonio, catches Nedda and Silvio, he tells Canio, who then confronts his wife and her lover on stage in front of a live audience.

Raylynmor’s interpretation of Pagliacci centers the action in the time of COVID-19. Instead of Nedda simply being trapped in her marriage, she has the added complication of being quarantined with her husband. The play within the opera is a take on the current obsession with livestreaming events. Ultimately, this production puts our consumption of online media into perspective and shines a modern and emotionally immediate spotlight on this operatic masterpiece from 1892.
